What is Power Play?

The Power Play is the Powerball prize multiplier. Players can play it or not by checking the corresponding boxes, it is an optional game. Its function is to multiply the secondary prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or sometimes even 10 times.

The Power Play with a value of 10 will be available only when the Powerball jackpot is less than 150 million USD. When the accumulated jackpot exceeds this amount, the available multipliers will be 2, 3, 4, and 5. The Power Play value is chosen randomly in each drawing, just before the winning numbers are drawn.

The value of the accumulated jackpot does not increase with the Power Play, since it always offers millionaire prizes. As for the second prize, it can only be doubled, from 1 million to 2 million USD. The rest of the prizes, from the third to the ninth, can be multiplied by 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 10 times.

History of Powerball

The origin dates back to February 13, 1987, when lottery officials from Washington D.C., Iowa, Kansas, Oregon, Rhode Island and West Virginia joined together to form the Multi-State Lottery Association. The game was priced at $1 per play and required players to select seven numbers from a pool of 40.

Between August 1989 and January 1991, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana, Idaho, Minnesota, Indiana, Kentucky and Delaware began selling Lotto America tickets.

In 1992 a change of name and game format took place, the well-known Lotto America draw was discontinued to become one of the most popular lottery games in the United States and known all over the world, Powerball. Players must choose five main numbers from 1 to 45 and a Powerball from another set from 1 to 45. The minimum jackpot at that time is 2 million USD.

In July 1993 the first nine-digit Powerball jackpot was distributed, a teacher from Wisconsin won 111 million USD. Powerball had already delivered important prizes before, but this was the first time that it surpassed the 100 million USD barrier.

Between 1994 and 1996, Arizona, Nebraska, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Connecticut and New Mexico joined forces to offer the Powerball lottery. The main reasons were the large prizes distributed until then, as well as the high ticket sales.

In 1997 there was a change in the game format. Now players had to choose five main numbers from 1 to 49, and the additional Powerball from 1 to 42. The minimum jackpot increased to 10 million USD.

During 2010, there were many more additions, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia and Washington, begin to sell Powerball tickets. This follows the agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association and the Mega Millions consortium allowing state lotteries to offer both games.

In 2012, the largest Poweball jackpot in 20 years was distributed, reaching a spectacular 587 million USD, a prize that was split between two winning tickets. Cindy and Mark Hill from Missouri and Matthew Good from Arizona were the lucky ones. Just one year later, Gloria Mackenzie, 83, won USD 590 million. This same year the ticket price doubled to $2, the Powerball number went up to $3, and the minimum guaranteed jackpot increased to $40 million USD.

In 2015 there are already 44 states offering the Powerball lottery. On October 4, 2015, the game format changes again, this time the range of main numbers is increased from 59 to 69, and the Powerball number is reduced from 35 to 26.

In 2016, a new record is set when a jackpot of $1580 million USD is split between three winning tickets. John and Lisa Robinson of Munford, TN, appear on the Today show just days later to announce they have one of the tickets. David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith of Melbourne Beach, FL, claim their prize in February. The identity of the latest winner is a mystery for months, until Marvin and Mae Acosta of Chino Hills, CA, finally come forward.

2017 saw a new jackpot record again. Mavis Wanczyk or Chicopee, Massachusetts won a spectacular 758.7 million USD, after a streak of 20 accumulations in a row. Her record was short-lived, in just one year in 2018, Manuel Franco won 768 million USD.

In 2020, despite the coronavirus pandemic, Powerball continued to offer its drawings. A new modification takes place, changing the minimum guaranteed prize to 20 million USD.

On August 23, 2021, a new drawing is introduced that will be held on Mondays; for the first time in Powerball's history, three drawings take place each week. A Double Play feature is also launched in 13 states, giving players even more chances to win.

Powerball is currently one of the most famous lotteries in the world, with an initial jackpot of 40 million USD and growing as long as there are no winners in the draw.
