The Spanish state lottery, currently "Loterías y Apuestas del Estado", is one of the oldest lotteries in existence. It began in 1763 (263 years ago, during the reign of Carlos III, and it was an instrument in favour of hospitals, hospices and other charities. This is the main reason why the Niños de San Ildefonso (a school in Madrid dating back to 1543) take part in the draws, and have been drawing the lucky numbers since 1771.
