What is the Christmas Lottery draw

The Christmas Lottery is one of the most popular lottery draws held in Spain every December 22nd. The draw consists of the distribution of numbers between 00,000 and 99,999 and the subsequent drawing of different prizes among those numbers. Each number is divided into 160 series, which in turn are subdivided into 10 tenths each. In this way, the final number that the participant can acquire is composed of the number itself, the serial number and the fraction. The tickets are called tenths because the bettor plays the "tenth" part of the amount of each series.

How to play

It is played by buying one or several Christmas Lottery tickets, it consists of matching 5 numbers plus the series and the fraction. The tenth is the necessary document to participate in the drawings. In each drawing the numbers from 00.000 to 99.999 are played.

Drawing script

The Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad lasts about three and a half hours. One drum is used for numbers and another for prizes. The Christmas draw consists of four phases:

• Ball counting: On December 21, one day before the celebration of the draw, the balls of the numbers and prizes are publicly examined and counted.
• Celebration of the raffle: The hall opens at 8:00 a.m. on December 22. Admission to the public is free until full capacity is reached. At 8.30 a.m. the table that presides and authorizes the draw is constituted. Then the balls are deposited in the hopper, where they are transported mechanically to their drum. The drums are closed and when so indicated by the President, they are turned over simultaneously. A child from the San Idelfonso School draws a ball from the number drum and another child, in turn, from the prize drum. The children sing the numbers at the same time and then insert the balls into the wires. The Christmas drawing ends when there are no more balls in the prize drum.
• Prize list: the draw consists of 1774 prizes of 1,000 Euros, eight fifth prizes of 60,000 Euros each, two fourth prizes of 200,000 Euros each, a third prize of 500,000 Euros, a second prize of 1,250,000 Euros, a first prize of 4,000,000 Euros called "El Gordo".
• Exhibition and closing: the tables of the winning numbers are exposed for seven days to the public. They are then opened, the balls are counted and examined and left ready until the next drawing.
