Mexico's National Lottery: two centuries of prizes

Formally known as the Loteria Nacional para la Asistencia Pública (Lotenal), it is the only institution in charge of conducting lotteries and games in Mexico.

This 252-year-old public company was founded on August 7, 1770 and is headquartered in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City. The purpose of its foundation was to promote the culture, health programs and culture of that country.

The entity, which is more than two centuries old and was inaugurated by King Bourbon III of Spain, was originally called Real Loteria General de la Nueva España (Royal General Lottery of New Spain). This changed with the country's independence in 1843.

In 2021 this corporation celebrated its 250 years of history, since its first drawing, with multiple celebrations, exhibitions and awards.

In addition to the years it has accumulated, the National Lottery for Public Assistance has been an important institution within the industry. Between 1988 and November 2001, the National Lottery presided over the Ibero-American Corporation of State Lotteries and Bets (CIBELAE). In 2001, Mexico (represented by this state-owned company) sat on the board of directors of the World Lottery Association (WLA) and became a member of the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL).

The National Lottery is undoubtedly one of the most important institutions in Mexico and the American continent, due to its history and trajectory.
