The first Superdraw of the year is getting closer and closer: this Friday 26th January, from 21:15 (GMT+1), the EuroMillions jackpot will jump from the 17 million in play on Tuesday, to the 130 million euros guaranteed for Friday's draw.

The Euromillions Superdraw (also called Big Friday or Super Jackpot in other countries) is one of the most anticipated events for players of this lottery during the year, as it is the opportunity to play for a much bigger jackpot than usual, at the same price and under the same conditions as the rest of the draws. And, in case there are no winners, the good news is that the jackpot continues to accumulate, and can reach record lottery amounts as on other occasions.

But how much do you really know about the Euromillions Superdraw , how many special draws have been held so far, has the jackpot always been shared out, who are the winners and in which countries does it play most often? If you are curious about the results of previous Superdraws, then we have prepared the perfect article for you!

Euromillions Superdraw History

The first Superdraw: February 2007

The first time a special draw with a much higher minimum guaranteed jackpot was held on 9 February 2007, although at that time the Superdraw jackpot was not EUR 130 million but EUR 100 million. A single bet sold in Belgium won the prize on the day of the draw.

How many Superdraws have there been since then?

Since that first draw in 2007, a total of 41 Superdraws have been announced, although not necessarily all of them have taken place: only in a few rare cases where the EuroMillions jackpot had already exceeded €130 million naturally, the Superdraw had to be postponed.

In all these years, the average number of Superdraw draws has been 2.5 draws per year. However, lately the trend since 2020 has been up to 4 draws per year, so we are likely to see more and more of these special draws.

Variations in the minimum guaranteed jackpot

In those early editions in 2007 and its first few years, the guaranteed jackpot of the Euromillions Superdraw was €100 million. However, this figure has grown and, since 2016, the minimum guaranteed jackpot is €130 million. This is not necessarily a static rule, though. The latest Superdraw held on 1 December 2023, for example, drew an incredible €200 million as the minimum guaranteed jackpot.

How many times has the jackpot been hit?

In Superdraws, as in all other EuroMillions draws, there may or may not be a winner on the day of the draw: if there are winners, the jackpot is shared out, but if not, it accumulates for the following draws, and can reach much higher figures than normal.

Of all the Superdraws draws held so far, only on 13 occasions have the jackpot been won on the day of the draw. On the rest of the occasions, when there were no winners, the jackpot was accumulated for the next draw, reaching much higher figures.

In fact, on four occasions Euromillions reached its record jackpot after multiple Superdraws with rollovers and, of the 10 biggest jackpots in Euromillions history, six were hit after a Superdraw.

The countries with the most Superdraw winners

As we all know, EuroMillions is a lottery held simultaneously in several European countries, a total of 9 (Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, United Kingdom and Switzerland). If we count all Superdraw draws, including those where the jackpot has been accumulated, the country where the Superdraw has been won the most times is the United Kingdom, being the winner of the special draw 13 times. This is closely followed by Spain with 10 winners, and in third place is France with 6.

Of the nine participating countries, Luxembourg is the only one that has not yet won Superdraw. And although Austria has only won it twice, it can be proud to hold the record for the biggest EuroMillions winnings of 240 million euros, a figure reached just after a special Superdraw of 200 million euros on 1 January 2023.
